We sell about 500-1000 iPhone's a moth to our overseas vendors and we aren't the only ones. Judging from the numbers from Apple and AT&T if there are 1 million unactivated iPhones running around that has to mean there are at least 1 million unlocked iPhones. By being the first company to offer a solution to unlock the iPhone in the US our call log counted over 2000 phone calls the first day alone with over 1000 orders coming in. I would have to say that there are about another half million unlocked iPhones running on AT&T's network right now mostly for people who travel internationally or simply did not want to sign another 2 year contract with AT&T.

After all that, can't Apple just brick the phone the next time they issue a software upgrade? Sure they can, they made the phone and they can do whatever they want to it. But of course it would be bad for business if they did. Their track record speaks for itself. They made that mistake once and I highly doubt they will repeat it again.

David: Overall, is it worth it to do this? How can the risk be reduced? And what final guidance do you have for our readers considering this grey area?

Shawn: There is no risk involved anymore. You just need to ask yourself a few questions question. Are you good with reading directions? Would you like to mail in your phone to us to perform the unlocking for you? Or simply purchase a pre-unlocked iPhone?

In short, I myself have an iPhone and love it. Before the iPhone, I used a RAZR on Verizon for two years and carried my iPod Nano with me everywhere I went. I no longer have a Nano and just carry one device around every where I go. It makes life so much simpler. You really get hooked onto it after carrying it around for a week.

My final word is if you don't have the time, if you are still scared of bricking your iPhone, if you have no faith in yourself and still want an iPhone just not on AT&T, then just purchase one that has already been unlocked.

And once again I would like to simply point out something my father once taught me as a child. "If its not broken don't fix it". I can't stress this enough when it comes to software updates for the iPhone.

I always suggest being patient and waiting for our newsletter to give you advice on how to go about performing a safe update while keeping your iPhone unlocked. And keep in mind that it will also take weeks to come up with a safe update once Apple has released the software.

I would personally like to thank all those in the iPhone dev team as well as the people that created the installer application to allow for the possibility of unlocking the iPhone.

Many people were experiencing that from not knowing how to correctly jailbreak their iPhones and again to those that unlocked their iPhones and went to update the software via iTunes when new software became available.

This initially caused the iPhones to stop functioning and there was no solution in sight at the time. Now, many months later, we are seeing that if you had a bricked iPhone, all you need to do is update the software to the latest release and somehow the update corrects everything that went wrong to the phone and fixes itself to turn it back into a virginal out-of-box state.

Out of all the iPhone's we have seen, played with, and unlocked, there has never been one unit that has not repaired itself by restoring to the latest software available.

With that said, I do not recommend anyone updating their software if they do not know what they are doing. If you have certain questions or again need tech support you can email us and we will be glad to assist info@wirelessimports.com.

So if it isn't illegal to unlock an iPhone, why would it be legal for Apple to "brick" them?

I don't believe Apple would maliciously brick iPhones with their software updates. They believed they had a unlockable product on their hands since, after many months, no one was successful in really unlocking the iPhone.

I believe that, when Apple was working on the software updates, they did not factor in the possibility of a jailbreak and therefore take precautions against it. However when the 1.1.1 software was released Apple made it a point to change the way their new software works.

I don't know exactly how it works, but I believe it does a clean erase of the OS then reinstalls the OS so there is no trace of the jailbreak. I could be wrong, but if that is the case, then it would explain why the jailbreak or unlocking can no longer brick the iPhone.

David: iPhones are already quite expensive. Do you really think people would want to go through the risk of unlocking them, take the chance for bricking, and then use another carrier, potentially spending a lot more?

Shawn: iPhones can no longer be bricked but they can be relocked again by future updates, which as of at least the time of this interview in early February, can be downgraded back to older software which can be re-unlocked.

So now to justify the price tag of a $400 iPhone + unlocking fees.

Well, you could spend the same amount of money and get yourself a different phone, but I can almost promise you that it won't have half the features of the iPhone. I only know of two other phones that have 8GB built-in both by Nokia -- N91 8GB and N95 8GB, both of which will run you in excess of $600. The iPhone really speaks for itself; if you want, one there really is no alternative. The type of person who buys an iPhone already knows this.

Unless you've been under a rock, you've heard about the iPhone. You've probably also heard terms like "unlocking" and "bricking" applied to this handy, if pricey gadget. What's it all mean? Is Apple purposely destroying phones? If you want to add software to your phone, are you voiding your warranty? What if you want to switch carriers? We asked wireless expert Shawn Zade to explain it all.

David: Please tell us about yourself.

"Bricking is when your fancy, expensive electronic toy turns into a paperweight."

Shawn: My name is Shawn Zade and I work for WirelessImports.com. Wireless Imports has been in the business of selling cellular phones which are imported from all across the world for use in the USA. 99% of our handsets are not offered by any carrier in the US. All our handsets are 100% unlocked for use with either AT&T or T-Mobile.

David: Can you explain iPhone unlocking?

Shawn: Typically carriers such as AT&T and T-Mobile lock their phones so they can't be used with any other carrier. The purpose of this is to ensure that the customer stays with the carrier and does not leave.

David: Why would someone want to unlock an iPhone?

Shawn: If you're asking this question, you don't live outside the continental US and you don't live in places like Montana. Did you know AT&T does not offer service in Montana? So what happens to people that live there and want an iPhone because it syncs so perfectly with their iMac?

Well, if you're one of those unfortunate people, then you can't use an iPhone because AT&T doesn't offer service in your area. However, if you can get your hands on one and then unlock it, then you would be able to use it with any GSM carrier you can find such as T-Mobile or the lower-tier local carriers.

But what if you are an AT&T customer? What benefit do you have then of having it unlocked? I'll answer your question by giving you a real world example of my last international visit.

I took a trip out to Israel. if my phone had remained locked I would have had to pay $2.50 a minute to to AT&T to talk to anyone that I called or who called me, however since my iPhone was unlocked, I was able to walk into a local cell phone store and purchase a pre-paid SIM card just like you do here in the US.

I put that into my phone and anyone who called me was a free call while outgoing calls were only .20" a minute. Plus I had a local number for my Israeli friends and family to reach me on.

Computing Unplugged's evaluation
Overall, we liked this book, but were somewhat disappointed that it doesn't cover the new iPhone 2.0 development environment, the iPhone App store, and how to develop software legitimately. Admittedly, the book was published before the new iPhone 3D was announced, but we would have liked to see at least one chapter on the new iPhone SDK.

Because of that, we had to drop a star and rate this a 3-out-of-5. Hopefully, there'll be another edition that brings everything up to date.

Why You Need An iPhone

Ever since the introduction of the Apple iPhone, there has been a huge public response to this product. Millions of people are proclaiming the wonders and beauty of this cell phone, iPod, calendar and mobile Internet device. However, the real question is, why do you need to have an iPhone? Of course, it seems that it is a great product because it streamlines your electronic productivity and allows you to have many products wrapped up into one, but what are the real perks to having an iPhone? The answer to this question really depends on who you ask. However, there are many actual reasons why the iPhone is a great purchase.

The first reason why having an iPhone is a good idea is because it helps to streamline your life. There is no denying that many of us live a very hectic and extremely busy life. We rarely have time to relax, nonetheless running around the house looking for your cell phone, iPod and PDA. However, when you have an iPhone you are actually getting all of these electronics, in one slim and sophisticated product. Many people who used to carry around two or three electronic devices are thrilled at how easy and convenient their iPhone actually is.

They no longer have to worry about running out of pocket space for your mobile devices, thus they are able to move throughout their life without having to worry about leaving their iPod at their friends house or their cell phone at the restaurant. With the iPhone, everything is packaged in a beautiful, and one-of-a-kind, device.

Another reason why you actually need an iPod is because you are able to have the world at your fingertips, literally. Unlike other cell phones, which allow you to look at a dumb-down version of the Internet, with the iPhone, you are actually surfing the net. If you have never been able to access the Internet while sitting in traffic, or looking up your friend’s MySpace profile on a whim, than you do not understand how great it is to be able to access the World Wide Web on a moments notice. This constant availability to information is a great feature, and once you have it you will never want to own an internet-less cell phone again.

Because so many of us have jobs across town, and friends that live on the other side of the city, we are always in our cars. But what happens when you are asked to go somewhere, and you don’t know where it’s at? Normally, you get on the Internet and MapQuest it, however, if you have an iPhone, than accurate directions to any destination is only a few ‘taps’ away. When you have an iPhone, than you automatically gain access to the powerful mapping service, Google Maps, and it is with this application you can find your local pizza joint, Starbucks or even Public Library. One of the coolest features is not the fact that you can get directions to this location, but you can also call them too.

Say you typed in “Starbucks,” you would then be shown the closest Starbucks to where you are currently at. You can then call them and place your order, or ask them questions about their coffee. Very rarely will you find a device that not only connects you to your world, but also brings you closer to it. With technology seemingly pushing the “world” further away, it is extremely refreshing to find a mobile device that connects you with those around you in such a dynamic way.

iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2 jailbroken

If you blinked, you might have missed it: one day after Apple released an update to the iPhone OS 3 beta, hackers have already jailbroken the OS 3 beta 2 release.

A new version of QuickPWN for Windows only (direct download link) has been released. This version should work with all versions of the iPhone or the iPod Touch. We have not yet tried the jailbreak, but our sources have not reported any trouble with the hack. (As usual, however, download and use QuickPWN at your own risk.)

Apple's new laptop, the MacBook Air, may not be the true ultraportable that many had hoped for, but it still easily breaks new ground for small laptops. Mimicking the 13-inch silhouette of the current MacBook line, it's only 0.76 inch thick at its thickest part, and Apple calls it the "world's thinnest notebook." Some nitpickers say an obscure Mitsubishi laptop from 1998 was a hair thinner, but two of the smallest current ultraportable laptops, the 11-inch Sony VAIO TZ150 and the 12-inch Toshiba Portege R500, are both slightly thicker, and neither tapers to 4 millimetres as the Air does along its front edge.

As we've come to expect from Apple, the design and engineering that went into the MacBook Air is extraordinary, but it's certainly a much more specialised product than the standard 13-inch MacBook and won't be as universally useful as that popular system. The biggest compromises, which have been well-documented, come in its connectivity: The MacBook Air finds room for only one USB port and doesn't include a built-in optical drive, FireWire, Ethernet, or mobile broadband. And like with its other laptops, Apple refuses to outfit the Air with a media-card reader or an expansion card slot. Off-setting its sparse connectivity are genuinely useful new features including new touchpad gesture controls and the ability to wirelessly "borrow" another system's optical drive.

Choosing the Air over the cheaper, faster standard 13-inch MacBook, or the comparably priced MacBook Pro, will depend on your needs. Travellers who want minimum weight but maximum screen real estate, and who live their lives via Wi-Fi hot spots with little need for wired connectivity, will find the AU$2,499 starting price a reasonable investment for owning one of the world's premier bits of high-tech eye candy. And while the MacBook Air's specs are inferior to those found on the cheaper MacBook, they compare more favorably when you look at other ultraportables, where a price premium is always exacted. For instance, both the Sony VAIO TZ150 and Toshiba Portege R500 cost hundreds more than the MacBook Air and feature slower CPUs and half the RAM as the Air.

Although it shares a desktop footprint with the standard black and white MacBooks, the first thing you notice about the Air is its aluminium chassis -- similar to the one found on the MacBook Pro, and much more fingerprint resistant than the standard MacBooks. Picking it up, the MacBook Air feels a little heavier than you'd expect from looking at it, even though it's only 1.4 kilograms. At the same time, it feels very sturdy and solid, thanks in part to the aluminium construction, and we'd have no qualms about carting it around with us all day. By way of comparison, the VAIO TZ150 features an 11.1-inch screen and weighs only 136 grams lighter than the Air, and the Portege R500 is 272 grams lighter than the Air with a 12.1-inch screen.

The MacBook Air includes an iSight camera and mic, and an LED backlit display that works with an ambient light sensor to adjust the screen brightness in response to the light in the room. The keyboard -- the same full-size version found in other MacBooks -- has backlit keys that are also controlled by the ambient light sensor, although we really had to adjust the room lighting a good deal to see any difference.

The revamped touchpad is large, measuring nearly 127 millimetres diagonally, and it works with new multitouch gestures. Other MacBooks let you do things like use two fingers to scroll through documents -- this one lets you use three fingers to go forward and back in your Web browser history, and use your thumb and forefinger to zoom in and out of documents and photos -- much like on the iPhone. The three-finger forward/back gesture was immediately useful, and we're already missing it when using another laptop. Apple tells us these new gestures won't be available on older MacBooks as a firmware upgrade, as the hardware behind the new touchpad is different.

Another noteworthy new feature is the remote disc function. Since the Air lacks an optical drive, you can instead remotely see the optical drives of other systems, PC or Mac, as long as they're on the same network. The setup was a little cumbersome for the "host" PC -- requiring us to insert the OS X disc that came with the Air, run a small setup program, and then find and turn on "CD and DVD sharing" in the Windows control panel (the documentation could have been a little clearer on what you need to do to on the Windows side). Once we set it up, however, it worked like a charm. You won't be able to stream DVD movies or music CDs via remote disc, but it's fine for getting files and installing apps. A matching external USB DVD burner is available from Apple for AU$139, but any USB DVD drive should work.

The display offers the same 1,280x800 native resolution as the standard 13-inch MacBook, but the Air's LED backlit screen means its lid is thinner with an image that was somewhat brighter, at least with both systems set to max brightness.

The real key to finding out whether the MacBook Air is right for you lies in its stripped-down set of ports and connections. Those who regularly use more than one USB device, or need FireWire, an SD card slot, or an Express card slot will find the single USB jack too limiting. Likewise, we often say the telephone modem jacks and S-Video outputs on most laptops are a waste of space, but the MacBook Air goes even further, removing the Ethernet jack (a USB-to-Ethernet adaptor will run you AU$39) and offloading video output to a pair of included dongles (one VGA, one DVI).

If you live on Wi-Fi hot spots, use Bluetooth for your external mouse, and only need a USB port to occasionally sync and charge your iPod or iPhone, these limitations may not be a deal-breaker for you. While most hardware vendors offer a choice of mobile broadband options, Apple continues to offer none, which is disappointing for a system so clearly meant for life away from home and office. Without an Express card slot, your only option would be a USB mobile broadband modem, but with the sole USB jack under a tiny flap on the right side of the system with limited clearance, you may need a small USB extension cable to get a bulky USB mobile broadband modem connected (similar to the problems people had with the iPhone's recessed headphone jack).

While the 80GB hard drive included in the base AU$2,499 model may be smaller than you're used to, the only other option is a 64GB solid state hard drive. With no moving parts, and advantages in heat, power consumption, and reliability, SSD hard drives are certainly the way of the future. The future may have to wait a few years for prices to come down, however; swapping the 80GB platter drive for the 64GB SSD drive is a whopping AU$1,409 upgrade. The only other internal hardware option is a CPU uptick, from 1.6GHz to 1.8GHz for AU$430. With the upgraded CPU and SSD drive, the AU$2,499 MacBook Air suddenly becomes a $4,338 laptop.

We are pleased to see that the MacBook Air comes standard with 2GB of RAM, but with a processor that runs at a much slower clockspeed than the standard MacBook (2.0GHz or 2.2GHz), plus a 4,200rpm 1.8-inch hard drive (as opposed to the standard 5,400rpm), it's not surprising that the MacBook Air is not as fast a performer as some of the MacBooks past.

As we often point out though, any modern dual-core CPU is going to be more than adequate for Web surfing, multimedia playback, and productivity tasks, and we were able to surf the Web, play videos, and work on a document at the same time with absolutely no slowdown or stuttering. We're currently conducting additional benchmark tests and will update this review with new results as they're available.

One of the biggest drawbacks of the MacBook Air is the lack of a replaceable battery. While most laptops will be obsolete before their batteries wear out, we are sensitive to the desire to occasionally carry an extra battery for extended field use. We're still conducting our standard DVD battery drain test on the system, and will report those scores shortly, but in anecdotal testing, the Air lasted for nearly 4 hours of mixed use, including video playback, software installation, Web surfing, and productivity tasks. That's reasonably close to Apple's 5-hour claims, but may not be enough for a full day of off-site use.

We're still not fans of Apple's nearly obligatory extended warranty upsell (so much so that we've simply copied this complaint from our last MacBook review). The default warranty for the MacBook is one year of coverage for parts and labour, but toll-free telephone support is limited to a mere 90 days -- well short of what you'd typically find on the PC side -- unless you purchase the AU$419 AppleCare Protection Plan, which extends phone support and repair coverage to three years.

We all know the gangster rules: "Don't go against the family", "Never bring a knife to a gun fight", "Don't get high on your own supply", and we've been applying them for years on Facebook with the Mafia Wars app. Well, it's time to take the fight to our mobile, iPhone-style.

If you're new to Mafia Wars, the concept is pretty simple. You're a gangster vying for money and power and you'll fill your coffers and rise through the ranks by completing jobs and attacking enemies. To do these basic tasks of thuggery you'll need weapons, stamina and gangsters on your side. Weapons are easy to come by, you buy them from the weapons menu, but stamina and gangsters take time and real-life friends, meaning this isn't a game you'll be able to rush through.

Stamina regenerates very slowly over time. At the beginning you start with 10 energy points and you'll spend these quickly mugging and robbing for cash and experience. Energy then regenerates at one point every three real-world minutes, meaning it's a half an hour before you have a full complement of energy to use again. By the time you reach level five or six, this wait could be as long as an hour at a time. Adding mafia gang members can be achieved in two ways: you can either invite friends playing Mafia Wars using their unique 10-digit code, or beg the mythical Godfather for lackeys to support your wicked ways.

Mafia Wars is our favourite kind of iPhone game. It doesn't rely on twitch reflexes or dodgy on-screen controls, and it looks fantastic. The menus and sound effects give off a slick Guy Ritchie-like gangster chic with gritty cell-shaped images of thugs, guns and piles of cash.

Apple's iPod Touch is proving to be a valuable tool to members of the US military, according to a report in Newsweek. The report notes that the iPod performs many functions in this time of "networked warfare", the iPod allows soldiers to be linked with other soldiers as well as intelligence resources, such as aerial images from drones and translation software.

Soldiers can use apps to add translated phrases to maps and photos, as well as show villagers video messages from local leaders. A new program called Vcommunicator translates spoken and written Arabic, Kurdish, as well as two Afghan languages.

Because new recruits are already familiar with how the iPod and iPhone work, it's also easier to train soldiers on loading content, the report notes.

Oh yeah, this rugged device, which retails for less than US$230, was developed in the private sector without taxpayer money. Considering the military's history of being charged for US$435 hammers, US$640 toilet seats and US$7600 coffee-makers by contractors, this is a great deal.

Months after teasing us at CES with an announcement of Skype's native VoIP client for the iPhone, the free Skype for iPhone will finally be available to download from the iTunes App Store sometime on Tuesday.

We got a chance to sit down with the application's principal engineer before the announcement was made at CTIA 2009, to see Skype for iPhone do its thing. While most of the features aren't too surprising — Skype does want to maintain some consistency across its mobile applications, after all — there are a few capabilities that are notably missing, and a few iPhone-only perks that are refreshing to see.

In terms of navigation, Skype's VoIP app for the iPhone looks more like your traditional iPhone app than it does Skype 4.0 for Windows. For many who already prefer Apple's sleek interface archetype, that's a triumph, but those who enjoy Skype's branding may feel disappointed.

Skype's screens are well organised and use the iPhone's ability to add filters, for instance to sort your contacts alphabetically, or by who's online. There's chatting as well, though Skype's flagship feature is its VoIP calling that's free to other Skype users and an inexpensive per-minute fee to landlines. Calls on Skype for iPhone only work if you're in range of a Wi-Fi network, so your call quality will in part be at the mercy and strength of wireless networks nearby — calls will not work over the mobile phone network on the iPhone (but chatting will). Assuming your connection is solid, you can dial a number or quickly call a contact stored in your address book. iPod Touch users will need earphones with an embedded mic to talk. During a call, you can mute the line, go on hold or put the call on speakerphone. In the My Info window, you can follow a link to buy more SkypeOut credit online.

Taking a photo from within Skype to serve as your avatar image, or pulling a picture in from the camera roll are two iPhone-only features that makes use of the phone's hardware attributes. Another imperfect, but still neat, feature is the ability to accept incoming conference calls. While you won't be able to initiate a call, we're told, you will be able to jump on one if a buddy invites you in. We hope the next version includes placing conference calls from the iPhone.

Skype left a few more skills out of its maiden iPhone voyage. SMS, setting up a conference calling group, purchasing SkypeOut credit directly, and being able to field a second incoming Skype call are a few. File transferring and getting Skype voicemail native on the phone are two more. We expect to see at least two of these added in the next version, but we'll hope for more.

Skype versus the competition
Here's the big question on our minds: will Skype's iPhone app replace competitors like Nimbuzz and Fring, which focus on cross-network IM but also include VoIP calls with Skype pals even though they've been available for the iPhone for months? Kurt Thywissen, the principal engineer for Skype for iPhone, thinks so. He says what the other apps use is a workaround that requires them to channel calls through a server and transcode audio, resulting in poorer-quality calls than Skype can do in its own app. He may be right, but those who IM more than they vocalise probably won't ditch the likes of Fring too soon. They might, however, let Skype handle the calls and let another app take care of the multi-network chatting.

Google launches gNews for iPhone

its Australian arrival expected in late June — Google's special (and slick) interface that was introduced in mid-December has been limited to English speakers. However, the company has now rolled it out to 33 countries in 16 languages, including Chinese — despite the fact that the handset is not available through any Chinese carriers.

More importantly, Google continues to create special mobile variations of its other pages, which now includes Google News and support for users of Google Apps. Google Apps users can now check their mail using the same interface that regular Gmail users have been enjoying, with the added benefit of being signed in to use the other mobile Google services.

The updated news viewer allows users to browse by the front page or by section, and features a built-in search tool. It's still essentially a link repository to other third-party sites, but it's now far easier to parse through on smaller screens than its original format.

What really makes the updated News page shine is that it integrates YouTube videos in the related stories. If there are videos for a selected subject, you can view them as thumbnails, which when clicked will jump you to the handset's built-in YouTube viewer. Short of actually having Flash, this is the closest you'll get to being able to casually watch Web videos while browsing other news networks. You could also use a conversion tool like vTap or Avot mV, but this new system requires one less step.

We still think most iPhone users will be inclined to use Safari's built-in search tool, which can be set to use either Google or Yahoo without having to venture to a search page first. With the speed of EDGE, we often find ourselves skipping any unnecessary page load when it comes time to search on the go, something that won't be fixed until the purported 3G version of the handset comes out later this year.

Apple has put together a list of 204 Web-based applications for the iPhone in hopes of giving hacking-averse users some additional options for their phones.

The list, spotted by Daring Fireball, highlights a Facebook Web app as a "staff pick" by Apple. During Steve Jobs' presentation to Apple's developers in June, he also called out a Facebook application as an example of all the things developers can create without native access to the iPhone.

For most iPhone users, this list will satisfy the itch for additional utilities on their phones. For example, they'll be able to order movie tickets from Fandango, dictate thoughts to be recorded as text via an application called reQall, and remotely control the iTunes library with an iPhone or iPod Touch through the Roami application. But I get the feeling a few were added to pad the list, such as the Tip Calculator for iPhone (which already has a calculator on the home screen); The Wheel, for calculating "a baby's due date and the baby's gestational age anytime during pregnancy"; and Coin Flip, which, well, flips a coin.

To be fair, most of the Web applications on the list seem pretty useful. However, it's not the same as having native applications written for the device, which we'll probably see up and running again soon now that the iPhone has been hacked once again. One day, we might do everything through a Web browser, but today is not that day, and the EDGE network is not that network.

While the company has since made it easy for people to bookmark Web apps onto their home screens by adding a quick link from inside of Safari Mobile, the "official" directory of Web apps continues to be unapproachable for iPhone users unless they're on a speedy Wi-Fi connection. Widget directory Widgetbox has come up with its own solution and launched a directory of iPhone-friendly widgets that can be installed on the home screen as mini widgetised Web apps.

The directory interface is completely iPhone-friendly, and to go alongside it there's a simple how-to guide to turning bits of Web content into widgets that can be added to the directory just by tagging your work with "iPhone." Users without any sort of Web development experience will be able to make their own iPhone widget apps using Widgetbox's widget-building wizard, which I'm assuming will get iPhone-centric size presets.

The one thing I found underwhelming with most of the example iPhone widgets is that they look just like they do in the directory instead of taking up the entire screen. They also come with Widgetbox branding and links back to the directory -- two things which are bound to take crucial seconds to load while on an EDGE connection. However, it's still a lot better than having to load the entire Web page.

I have worked for years developing small web applications for self employed people. Every single one of them seems to desire getting on the internet, they like the idea of billions of people being able to visit their website and contact them. They think this will boost their business.

A lot of nice services may be built in this way.

Moreover, if you are a small business with an office where people come and wait for a period of time, such as if you are a doctor or a consultant, you could offer them some information to browse while you are busy, thereby telling them about aspects of your job they might not be aware of and creating more business opportunities.

Starting from that, I have written a software for the Mac called CuriosityAndVanity that is currently free to use in order to let people try that idea, but I am sure that everyone who has the necessary experience with network programming could easily create a software like that one. I hope that soon Volatile Local Networks will be another great tool for self employed people in order to grow and prosper.

Yesterday, I had someone approach me that asked about the "pink iPhone clone." First, I thought the person was talking about a skin or custom cover that was pink in color and designed for a knock off. Then, when she assured me that she was not talking about a skin, I figured that she meant the Xphone, as this newer iPhone clone comes in many custom colors like red, gold, blue, and silver. But, she persisted that she was actually talking about a pink CECT i9. So, of course, I had to investigate and I found out that she was indeed right. There are a few sellers who have come up with a way to customize plates on the i9 to make the phone any color you can imagine (pink is very popular). But, this is very different than the XPhone, which comes standard with the colors I've already listed (as well as black if this is what you want). So, as I can now see that people may confuse these two phones, I'll go over their differences (and similarities) in this article.

Tri band Versus Quad Band: The XPhone is a tri band and the i9 is a quad band. Both will usually work for most GSM carriers, but if you are on the 850MHz band, you'll most likely need a quad band. You can check with your carrier to be sure.

Similarity In Features, (Including Shake Control And Dual Sim): These phones are both very similar to one another, since they are both iPhone clones that has all of the features we've come to expect from these knock offs (Bluetooth, Internet, MP3 / MP4, radio, handwriting recognition, camera / web cam, etc.) And, both have the very popular novelty feature called "shake and tilt" or "swing to the music" that allows you to forward songs, music and video by shaking the phone. My understanding of the business model at the moment on the iTunes App Store is that you only pay for the application once, and any upgrades to the application that is not deemed as a completely new application you will not be charged for. For a user that is nice to hear as in the early stages of application development for this new media platform there is often early bugs in the first releases of any application, and as developers get better at taking advantage of the Apple development platform, the apps will continue to evolve and get more advanced.

But the question has to be asked; how long until the iPhone app industry realizes that to make their business more sustainable constant innovation is not enough, and they need to find ways to make more money out of the apps they have already created and put into the marketplace.

Why should you pay 99p or more for the items on the right of this review? If you are able to find and read this guide, then you have the ability to unlock your own phone without paying somebody else for the privilege. There are a huge number of people listing a mobile phone unlocking service, or offering the software for sale that willl allow you to unlock the phone yourself. This is tantamount to theft as the codes are readily available all over the internet

For those that do not know what unlocking is all about, it simply means that your handset is locked to one operator network, T-Mobile, Vodaphone etc. If you try to use a T-Mobile sim card in a handset supplied by vodaphone, you will see a message telling you something along the lines of "SIM REJECTED" or "SIM DISALLOWED"

Networks subsidise the cost of the handset against the contract that you take out. The true cost of the handset can be hundreds of pounds, (the new N70 is retailing at £300 on the Nokia website) but if you agree to a 12 or 18 month contract, you can quite often receive the latest range-topping handset free, especially if you have a history of high monthly bills!!

The idea behind sim-locking is to protect the networks' investment in the subsidised price of the handset - they have had to buy the phone, and have given it you on the basis that you use their network for the next 12 months. However their price plan may not be ideal for you and another operator may be able to offer a better deal on some items. Vodaphone for example, are quite expensive on internet and web-surfing, but O2 offer some great packages on Mb usage. I have a great contract on Vodaphone for minutes and texts, but for internet use, I swap sim cards to use my O2 PAYG for surfing the mobile internet. I also use foreign PAYG sim cards when I go on holiday - it is still cheaper than using roaming on my home network

So how do you unlock your phone? Most phones can be unlocked by entering a long alpha-numeric code, something that looks like #pw+1234567890**# Many Motorolas can also be unlocked remotely, however the codes are held by Motorola who tend only to release them to trade customers - network providers, Phone shops, repairers etc. Alternatively, they can be 'clipped' - plugged into a laptop or specialist piece of hardware, both of which are readily available in small independent phone shops, or many market stalls for a few pounds. Sony -Ericsson phones also require a cable connection.

Although I am not allowed to post links outside of Ebay in this guide, Google should be your first obvious step. Knowing what to look for is the crucial part though.

Search for nokia (or your handset brand) free unlocking, and you will find thousands of matches to start with.

Avoid any adverts that require you to call a premium rate number, all they are doing is automating the process that you should be doing yourself, and charging you up to £3.00 per minute for the privilege!!

Amongst the search results look for a "DCT4 calculator" or even search for a "free DCT4 calculator". This is the magical piece of software that works out what your unlock code is. It was written (I believe) by somebody known as "hollowman" or "dejan"- the guy (or girl) deserves a medal! The software is in the public domain, and although it is free to use, it is still illegal to distribute it and earn from it yourself - something that the guys listing on the right of this review do not seem bothered about!

There is also website called nokiafree.org that offers reviews, advice, guidance and help on all Nokia related matters, and as you may have guessed, it's free to browse their site! The forums are a hotbed of information on all Nokia issues, written by everyday people with an unhealthy interest in all things cellular and Nokia-like. Crucially though, they offer an online DCT4 calculator that is completely free to use.

Most modern phones from the last few years can be unlocked using this calculator, Alcatel, some Siemens, most Nokia, most Samsung. LG, Panasonic & Sharp amongst others.

The calculator simply asks for your IMEI number, and a 5 digit network operator code (which is usually helpfully supplied the website operator!) After entering in your handset type (3310, 7710 etc) a series of codes are displayed, one of which will unlock your phone when entered. Whilst researching for this guide, I found 28 sites that offered the free online calculator, or free to download. Of these 28, only 3 did not offer comprehensive, or easy to follow instructions.

There is a new breed of sim-lock however, in the form of a BB5 locking protection. Currently this includes the Nokia N series (N70, N80, N90, N91) and the Nokia 6630 & 6680 smart phones. These have the sim lock hard-coded into one of the chips inside the handset, and currently there is no program or software that will crack this. Despite what people are advertising YOU CAN NOT UNLOCK THESE PHONES YOURSELF!! The codes are unique to each handset, and are not linked to the IMEI number. Unless somebody gains access to the list of unlock codes held securely by Nokia, there is no way around this. Even when software has been developed to crack the codes, it will be a case of connecting the hanset to a PC that can read the chips, and display the unlock code. Whoever invents that piece of kit will retire a rich man!

The phone has to be unlocked by a code issued by your network provider, and they will only issue the code to the registered owner and with a valid reason. The most effective and plausible reason is that you have a SIM card issued by your employers that you want to use, or as in the case above, be honest about the price plan - "your minutes and texts package is great, but I need to use the data service of another provider". If you buy one of these phones second hand and try to get it unlocked, you will be facing an almost impossible task.

It is also worth looking at the resale values of unlocked phones - try looking for the Nokia N70 or N80 in the eBay listings - identical phones, brand new in boxes but one is locked and the other not will have a £50 to £75 price difference. You are also offering up your phone to a much larger audience and more likely to obtain a sale.

With these cables you can connect your Nokia phone with your PC via a USB port.NOTE: No other cable will work because ONLY DKU-5 & CA-42 support FBUS.
(Pop-port cables DKU-2, CA-43 & CA-52 will not work since they do not support FBUS.)

You must have the latest version of that cable driver. Download here.

Battery should be fully charged & any SIM card should be removed.
Instructions:
1. Connect your phone with cable to computer. Switch on phone.

10 Things to Hate About the Iphone

I took delivery of my iPhone at the start of September, the start of a trying month personally that saw me out of the office for very long periods and only in touch with the world via my phone. It was a baptism of fire for me and the device.

You will have seen the adverts, played with it in phone shops, looked over fellow commuters' shoulders, borrowed your friend's ... great isn't it? Or is it?

In this article I touch on some of the things about the device that have really irked me. Just a bit or quite a lot. And to maintain the celestial karmic balance I have a companion article on some of the things about the iPhone that I absolutely love. There's enough material for both articles, I assure you!

So here we go, in reverse order, the 10 things that you should hate about the iPhone!

10. Grubby fingers and the onscreen keyboard

The iPhone's onscreen keyboard is surprisingly effective and doesn't take long to get used to.

Just remember to wash your hands before you do so, however! This isn't just cosmetic: For some reason I manage to leave a sticky mark under my right thumb that attract dust, biscuit crumbs, or whatever, right over the erase key. Usually the crumb lands there just as I finish the 2 page email and starts to rub out the whole message character by character! This is not an exaggeration!! It is, however, not a daily occurrence!!

9. External memory

I went the whole hog and took the 16GB iPhone immediately. I don't regret it! I haven't been selective with my music collection and have more or less all my ripped CDs stored on the iPhone. That's 14GB. Which leaves precious little room for real data.

On other devices this is rarely a problem and non-volatile storage is usually flash memory of some description, the size of which obeys Moore's law and doubles in size and speed every 9 months or so and halves in physical size every 2 years or so with a new "mini" or "micro" format. I have yet to run out of space on a mobile phone or smartphone, even with an address book of over 500 names.

The problem on the iPhone is that there is no external memory slot and no way (short of wielding a soldering iron) of expanding the internal memory. A shame. The iPod Touch has recently spawned a 32GB version and I imagine that the 32GB iPhone is on its way. When that happens the legacy user base will be left wondering what to do next.

8. Battery and battery life

The iPhone is sleek - barely a centimetre thick and enticingly smooth with those rounded edges. There are few buttons, no little doors to come open and break off in your pocket and no memory slots to fill up with fluff and dirt.

One of the reasons for the smooth design is that the iPhone does not have a user removeable battery. The battery can be changed by a service centre, and over the two years I will keep this device I expect to have to change the battery at least once, but I cannot do it myself. Also the battery is surprisingly small - it has to be to fit into this neat little package.

The price you pay for this is battery life. My device is now 6 weeks old and have been fully cycled about 5 times (I tend to keep the battery on charge but allow it to run flat at least once a week). If I am not using the device constantly, just checking the device twice an hour and answering calls, using 3G and Push, I can rely on a full working day of 10 to 12 hours between charges. If I turn on WiFi this drops to 6 or 7 hours. If I use the GPS without WiFi, autonomy drops to 4 or 5 hours. If I wanted to be really frugal and last a full 24 hours, I would need to turn off both Push email and 3G, and reduce screen brightness to a minimum.

For some people this is a major issue. For me, since I usually either have a PC on and can trail a USB cable, or spend the day driving with the iPhone hooked up as an iPod and being charged by the car, it is less of a constraint. But it remains an annoyance. I haven't yet seen an iPhone equivalent of the Dell Latitude "Slice" - a battery "back pack" for the iPhone that could more than double autonomy with minimal extra thickness, but I assume that someone, somewhere, is working on an aftermarket device.

7. Document management

There is no equivalent of the Windows Mobile File Manager or Mac Finder on the iPhone so there is no way of manipulating file objects on device.

Admittedly the iPhone does a credible job of shielding you from the need to do any file level manipulation: For example the Camera has a photo album that is also accessible in other applications that need to access images (for example, the iBlogger application I use to write short articles on this site). But there are still occasions when you need to manipulate individual file objects.

One is during installation and set up when installing root certificates for SSL so that the device can talk to an Exchange server: Unless you use Apple's enterprise deployment tool (which locks down the device and prevents further configuration changes, so not always desirable), the only ways to set up the device for Exchange are to set up a temporary IMAP account and download an attachment that you open, or to set up a website with the root certificate and define the appropriate MIME types on the web server (I could not get this to work, incidentally!). How much easier it would be to download the certificate onto the device using Windows explorer (connecting to a PC via USB exposes the devices memory as an attached storage device) and to be able to open the certificate file from memory on the iPhone.

The other key need for this functionality is when manipulating attachments on email messages. There is no way of saving attachments, or attaching documents selectively to a new or forwarded message.

6. Navigating through email folders

I tend to keep a lot of emails in my mailbox. I archive once a year, and usually towards the end of the following year. I'm also fairly busy and work on a dozen consulting and business development projects at a time. That means two things: a lot of emails, and the need to organise those emails sensibly.

I organise my emails into trees - consulting projects in separate folders and these folders organised by client, all kept separate from companies I'm invested in and from my personal stuff. Probably 40 or 50 folders.

On Windows Mobile devices I can organise this quite cleanly, with the ability to expand or collapse sections of the folder tree. The iPhone recognises the tree, but gives me no means of collapsing the hierarchy. The Inbox is always at the top: Junk email is always at the bottom. Moving incorrectly junked emails means traversing the whole tree, which is a pain even using the classy flick scroll gesture. It's clumbsy and unnecessary.

5. Filtering offline email content

The other side of this complexity is managing how much of my "online archive" to take with me.

There is no need (and no space) to take it all with me: I am quite used to placing sensible limits on the section of the mail folder to take with me. Windows Mobile allows me to take 1, 2 or 3 months worth of email with me, to say whether I take attachments with me, all the email or just the headers. I can even select which folders to take or leave behind. And I don't need to worry if I go away and find I am missing a crucial folder - I can change the parameters and the device will download what's missing.

The iPhone is slightly less flexible. It won't let me download attachments pre-emptively: It will only load the message header and leave the attachment behind unless and until I select the email manually. I can define how many days of emails I download from 1 day to 1 month, but beyond that I cannot specify a limit. I have a filter on the number of messages within a folder that I display from 25 to 200 messages but the interaction between this setting and the time limit is not entirely clear. If you are a light user this is less of an issue: For a heavier email user with a complex folder hieracrchy you have less control and can run into memory management issues as a result.

4. Message management and Exchange

The worst problem with message management on the iPhone is actually specific to Microsoft Exchange.

I am an expert user and really love Microsoft Exchange. It isn't just my mail server: It's a full collaboration engine, with group and resource scheduling, rich address book, "to do" lists, journaling, contact histories etc. I don't use it for fax and voice mail yet, but that is just a question of not having made the time to buy the interface box to the PBX and turn that feature on. So I am up there with the other 60% of enterprise mailbox users that are hooked on Exchange.

When the iPhone first appeared the Exchange interaction story was weak. It could do IMAP, but that's just a fraction of the story. No problem, that wasn't Apple's intended primary audience either, but the enterprise users clearly wanted the iPhone, so Apple got to work.

To be fair to them, Apple have done a lot with iPhone 3G to improve the Exchange story. Most of the security protocols are there, including critical features like remote wipe and SSL, and it supports Push. Enterprise deployment is straightforward too with a dedicated enterprise setup tool that supports remote device configuration. Unfortunately Apple seem to have stopped halfway through the API and a lot of Exchange functionality is overlooked. Some of this, like losing some data richness within calendar and contact items, doesn't affect all users equally. Other elements are more critical, however.

The best way to describe this is how you forward email messages with attachments. The Exchange API permits clients to forward the message without the message content being stored locally: You can forward the header and the server will attach the attachments and other rich content before forwarding. The iPhone doesn't understand this: First it has to download all of the message and attachments from the server to the iPhone, then it has to add the forwarding address and send the entire message back to the server. Moving a message between folders is the same and involves the same telecommunications overhead. A nuisance for me, but no more than that: If you aren't on a data bundle and pay by the MB then you need to be wary of this.

[Another side effect of this issue is that server-side disclaimers and signatures get placed at the end of the forwarded message, rather than under new message text.]

3. Reading HTML and rich text messages

I love HTML emails. I know that is considered a cardinal sin in some quarters, but as someone once said, if email had been invented after http would email have been done any other way? HTML is ubiquitous, it is clean and it works.

And of course being the best mobile web device on the market, the iPhone should be a fantastic HTML email reader, shouldn't it?

Well, it very nearly is. It does some things really well. It gets the layout, it renders inline graphics, it'll even show some background. But what if the text is really wide? It'll wrap won't it? No, it won't. It'll shrink the text to fit. It'll make the text really, really small. And you can't cheat by rotating the device, making the screen "wider" and the font larger, because the mail client doesn't support landscape presentation (why???).

Of course you can zoom in, because it's HTML, but then you have to scan the whole line, whizzing across the page to the end of the line, then whizzing back again to get the start of the next line. Oh dear!

2. Task switching

The iPhone is a lovely, clean design. And part of the cool, clean look comes from the absence of nasty short cut action buttons.

The iPhone has only three buttons on the edges of the device: the on/off button on the top, the volume up/down toggle on the side and the excellent single button mute button above the volume toggle. That's it. The only other button on the device is the "home" button on the front, below the screen.

The home button stops whatever application you are engaged on and takes you to the home page of the device - the pretty page full of icons that start up each application on the device. Good job it's pretty, because you see an awful lot of it.

There is no way to jump straight to your calendar, or address book, or email. Apart from the one "double click" action (user configurable to either select phone favourites or iPod controls), the only way to start a task is to go back to the home page and up again into the application you want. Find an interesting URL in an email that you want to look at in Safari? Memorise it well, or write it down, because unless the text has been created as a link you'll have to go back to the home page, start Safari, type the URL, realise you've got it wrong, press the home button again, start email, open the email, find the URL ... and start again.

Or you could just select the URL and cut and paste it into the browser address bar ... except ...

1. How on earth do you cut and paste?

Once Xerox had invented the mouse, the GUI and WYSIWYG editing, it was up to Apple to take that technology and make it affordable with the Lisa and the Mac. And Microsoft to make it ubiquitous, of course.

One of the joys of using the mouse, or any pointing device, is that it gives you a third dimension as you move around the page. You aren't constrained by the line or the word or the paragraph - you can jump straight to any part of the document. And you can select parts of a document by dragging over a word, a line, a paragraph, and do something with it. Like cutting it out. Or copying it. Or dragging it. It's normal. That's just what you do. You don't have 3 hour seminars and training courses on using a mouse (or a stylus) to point and select, click and drag. You demonstrate it once, the student understands and does it.

But the company that helped the mouse escape from the lab and get into the shops seems to have forgotten all about it. Get out your iPhone. Write a sentence. Write another one. Oops - that second sentence would make more sense BEFORE the first one. I'll just cut and paste the sentence. Oh no you won't!! Because there is no cut and paste on the iPhone. Hear that? No? Well, I'll say it again! THERE IS NO CUT AND PASTE ON THE IPHONE.

Google around a bit and you'll find dozens of articles on the subject. You'll find surprise, indignation, horror. You'll even find brave Apple gurus explaining sagely that you don't need cut and paste because the iPhone gives you more direct ways of using information, like linking URLS, or detecting phone numbers, or, er, something.

The most likely explanation is that once Apple has decided to do away with the stylus, the only UI gesture was to use two fingers and drag that over the page to select some text. But that gesture had already been taken with the excellent pinch zoom movement used on large documents and web pages.

There is a way out, however. Some very credible proof of concept demonstrations have been put on the web showing how a sustained point and drag with single finger (like the stylus selection action in Windows Mobile) would be workable and not conflict with any other screen action on the iPhone.

Let's hope that the concept demos work and we see cut and paste implemented in an upcoming firmware release. In the meantime, at least twice every day I bet every iPhone user will silently curse, shrug and give up writing that urgent memo because they just can't be bothered to type it all again.

So that's it. Please don't get me wrong, I think the iPhone is a wonderful, iconic and transformational device. As with the Mac, it has changed our perception of what a mobile device should be. Mobile phones and smartphones will never be the same again.

It's just that for all it's brilliance, it remains flawed. The iPhone is the product of a prolific and brilliant yet highly introspective group of engineers. Left free to innovate, unrestrained by any notion of reality or practicality or what the user currently thinks he or she wants, Apple have created a concept device. I'm grateful they have, but I fear that it will be up to other companies, with a clearer grasp of what the user can use, in particular what ELSE the user is doing, to take the iPhone to the next step.

One of the things that Apple hasn’t made easy for iPhone owners is providing a way to create custom ringtones in Windows. If you’re a Mac owner you can use GarageBand, but Apple doesn’t provide that application on Windows. Instead what they expect you to do is purchase a song for $0.99, and then convert it to a ringtone for another $0.99.

As it turns out in a few steps you can actually convert a DRM-free song into a ringtone using only iTunes in Windows. The trick also works for Mac users, but using GarageBand is a lot simpler so we’re focusing primarily on the Windows side.

On the Options tab locate the Start Time and End Time options. This is where you want to specify the portion of the song you wanted converted into a ringtone. Check both of the boxes, and make sure your ringtone is under 30-seconds. Press OK when finished.

Right-click on the song you just modified, and choose the Convert to AAC option. If you don’t see this in the context menu navigate to Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing, and make sure the AAC Encoder is selected in the Import Using menu.

Once the song has finished being converted to the new format it will appear in your music list, and the “Time” should reflect the correct duration of the ringtone (which should be less than 30-seconds). Now navigate to your iTunes music folder to find the converted song. Here’s an example of where my Green Day ringtone was located:

# Make sure you’re able to see the file’s extension (.M4A) like in the screenshot above. If you don’t see the extension go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View (Organize -> Folder and Search Options on Vista), and uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types box. Then click OK.
# Copy the music file (with the .M4A extension) to your desktop. Once you’ve done that rename the file’s extension to .M4R which will make iTunes recognize it as a ringtone. Make sure there are no symbols (underscores, hyphens, etc…) in the file name.

Some folks insist that one of the deal breakers of the iPhone is the lack of a physical keyboard while, in my opinion as a long time iPhone user who is used to its virtual keyboard, the need for a physical keyboard is unnecessary.

However, I have realized that as user habits change, and they depend more and more on smartphones like the iPhone rather than laptops while they are on the move and start using them for things like writing blog posts, long emails etc then an external keyboard can prove to be quite useful.

Stephen from Perceptive Development dropped us a comment on our earlier post about how an iPhone was hacked to make it work with a Bluetooth keyboard to tell us that they have developed a hardware and software solution that allows an external keyboard to work with an iPhone without hacking it.

iPhone Firmware 3.0 Beta Hacked to Enable USB Tethering
One of the features in iPhone firmware 3.0 that Apple strangely didn't announce was support for tethering but provided some details about the feature during the Q&A session.

Irish iPhone developer, Steven Troughton-Smith who had figured out a way to enable Emoji icons in iPhone firmware 2.2 with a simple hack has managed to enable tethering on his iPhone after upgrading to iPhone firmware 3.0 beta which is currently available only to developers of iPhone developer program.

Apple had released iPhone firmware 2.2.1 back in Jan which included some minor bugs and improvements.

However Dev Team had warned against updating to firmware 2.2.1 without preserving the baseband if iPhone 3G users wanted to unlock their iPhone as it also included a baseband update (02.30.03) which breaks the "injection hole" that they had used in their application yellowsn0w to modify the firmware which had helped to successfully unlock iPhone 3G.

There might be some good news for iPhone 3G users who had accidentally upgraded to iPhone firmware 2.2.1 without preserving their baseband as ModMyi is reporting that a tool called pHaseBanDowngrader has just been released that allows iPhone 3G users to downgrade baseband from 02.30.03 to 02.28.00.

iPhone used as a Virtual Joystick to Play Wolfenstein 3D; Also Paired with External PS2 Keyboard
Alex Winston sent us an email to tell us about an iPhone app that they have developed which works as a virtual joystick dubbed "Wolfenstick" to control Wolfenstein 3D Classic running on an iPod Touch (or second iPhone) through the audio port.

In addition to the virtual joystick which is pretty cool (you can checkout the video after the break), they have also demonstrated how it was also possible to pair an external PS2 keyboard with an iPhone using the same technique.

The impressive thing about their achievement is that they have managed to do it without jailbreaking the iPhone.

InstallerApp: iTunes equivalent for Jailbreak Apps
RipDev, developers of the Installer app, which simplifies installation of jailbreak apps on the hacked iPhone recently released a native Mac OS X application called InstallerApp.

RipDev claims that InstallerApp will allow you to download jailbreak apps from "Cydia" and "Installer" app onto your computer and install them on your jailbroken iPhone.

We had reported that Apple might launch the new version of iPhone in June based on on Phil Schiller's, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing statement to David Pogue of New York Times at Macworld 2009.

We are now getting more proof that Apple is preparing to launch new version of the iPhone. Greg Yardley, founder of Pinch Media which provides iPhone developers with ad serving and analytic tracking software to embed within iPhone applications; reported that one of their users has detected the new version of the iPhone.

The QuickPwn tool can be used to jailbreak and unlock 1st Gen iPhone and only jailbreak iPhone 3G. But using QuickPwn or the upgrading to iPhone Firmware 2.2.1 from iTunes will re-lock your iPhone 3G. So iPhone 3G users should use QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 if you DON'T care about unlocking and want to ONLY jailbreak your iPhone 3G.

PwnageTool 2.2.5 and QuickPwn 2.2.5 for iPhone Firmware 2.2.1 Released for Mac
The iPhone Dev team has released updated versions of their PwnageTool and QuickPwn Tools to jailbreak and unlock the 1st Gen iPhone and jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone firmware 2.2.1 that was released by Apple on Tuesday.

The updated PwnageTool will allow iPhone 3G users to create custom firmware (.ipsw) which will preserve the baseband so that it can be unlocked and also bring new features of iPhone firmware 2.2.1.

The latest versions of their iPhone hacking tools are PwnageTool 2.2.5 and QuickPwn 2.2.5. They are currently available only for Mac users. Dev Team will releasing QuickPwn 2.2.5 for Windows users shortly. Dev Team has also released QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 for Windows users.

Based on couple of patent applications filed by Apple at US Patent Office, Mac Rumors believes that Apple's research team is working on how to further improve iPhone's user interface based on "User Movements".

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Rejected from the App Store?
SlingMedia had announced towards the end of March that they have submitted their long awaited iPhone app - SlingPlayer Mobile to the App Store for approval.

AT&T in Discussion with Apple to Extend Deal to be Exclusive Carrier of iPhone?
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Randall Stephenson, AT&T’s CEO, is in discussion with Apple to extend the lucrative deal to be the exclusive carrier of iPhone in US.

It's speculated that the current deal is expected to expire next year (2010) though reports back in 2007 had suggested that AT&T had cracked an exclusive deal for 5-years.

Tool Released to Downgrade Baseband from 02.30.03 to 02.28.00 for iPhone 3G Users
Apple had released iPhone firmware 2.2.1 back in Jan which included some minor bugs and improvements.

However Dev Team had warned against updating to firmware 2.2.1 without preserving the baseband if iPhone 3G users wanted to unlock their iPhone as it also included a baseband update (02.30.03) which breaks the "injection hole" that they had used in their application yellowsn0w to modify the firmware which had helped to successfully unlock iPhone 3G.

There might be some good news for iPhone 3G users who had accidentally upgraded to iPhone firmware 2.2.1 without preserving their baseband as ModMyi is reporting that a tool called pHaseBanDowngrader has just been released that allows iPhone 3G users to downgrade baseband from 02.30.03 to 02.28.00.

Why Are iPhone Users Willing to Pay For Content?

It may be no surprise that the best-selling computer book this year is ''iPhone: The Missing Manual'' (O'Reilly, 2007), by David Pogue, the technology products reviewer for The New York Times.

But here is something that is surprising: The most popular edition of this book isn't on paper or the PDF file that O'Reilly Media also sells. It is the downloadable application for the iPhone, according to Tim O'Reilly, the chief executive of O'Reilly Media.

Amid all the discussion of micropayments and other ways that the creators of news and other content can be paid for their work, the iTunes App Store is shaping up to be a surprisingly effective way to sell all sorts of information and entertainment.

Why has this happened? Apple has created an environment that makes buying digital goods easy and common. With an infrastructure that supports one-click purchases of songs and videos, it was easy to add applications in the same paradigm.

There are certainly other precedents. Many people who steal songs through Limewire nonetheless pay $1.99 to use the same tunes as ring tones. And for avid book readers, Amazon's Kindle has found a market willing to pay for electronic books.

Apple is also starting to sell subscriptions to bundles of music, video and images from certain bands, like Depeche Mode. This is technically a product of the music store, not the app store, but it still shows how people may be willing to pay for various bundles of content online.

''There is a lot more we can do to take advantage of this as a new medium,'' said Andrew Savikas, O'Reilly's vice president for digital initiatives. O'Reilly, which sells to a lot of early adopters, has a range of digital distribution media.

Before media companies rejoice that Apple has found a way to persuade a generation used to getting everything free on the Web to pay for some content, they should look a bit more closely at O'Reilly's experience with the iPhone manual.

The book, which sells for $24.99, was initially offered as an iPhone app for $4.99. When the publisher raised the price to $9.99, sales fell 75 percent. O'Reilly quickly dropped the price back to the lower level.

''This audience is very price-sensitive,'' Mr. Savikas said.

The move comes a week after Amazon started shipping the updated version of its Kindle reading device. It signals that the company may be more interested in becoming the pre-eminent retailer of e-books than in being the top manufacturer of reading devices.

But Amazon said that it sees its Kindle reader and devices like the iPhone as complementary, and that people will use their mobile phones to read books only for short periods, such as while waiting in grocery store lines.

“We think the iPhone can be a great companion device for customers who are caught without their Kindle,” said Ian Freed, Amazon’s vice president in charge of the Kindle.

Mr. Freed said people would still turn to stand-alone reading devices like the $359 Kindle when they want to read digital books for hours at a time. He also said that the experience of using the new iPhone application might persuade people to buy a Kindle, which has much longer battery life than the iPhone and a screen better suited for reading.

Amazon also said its recently unveiled Whispersync function would work for people who own a Kindle and one of the Apple devices. They can access their library of previously purchased e-books on all of their devices at no additional cost. Amazon will also create automatic bookmarks, so that a user can stop reading a book on one device and pick it up on another device at the same spot in the text.

The move by Amazon tangles competitive dynamics in the growing e-book industry. Many analysts thought pocket-size versatile smartphones could eventually eat into the small but growing market for stand-alone book readers that do little else and still do not have color screens or full-featured Web browsers. With the announcement, Amazon appears to be hedging its bets.

Analysts had also thought Amazon was closely following the template Apple had created with the iPod and trying to dominate the market with a ubiquitous, must-have consumer electronics device. Now it appears Amazon is more interested in selling as many e-books as possible on its site, and collecting the royalties, while strengthening its ties with customers, many of whom will buy other products from Amazon if they start buying e-books.

“A couple months ago a lot of people thought Amazon was slavishly imitating the Apple model,” said Bill Rosenblatt, president of the consulting business GiantSteps Media Technology Strategies. “It turns out they have a different model than Apple. They are smarter than everyone thought.”

The developments also suggest that, true to his word, Steven P. Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, has little interest in the market for digital books. Mr. Jobs once dismissed the Kindle by saying “the whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read anymore.”

Unlike other forms of media like music and video, which Apple sells itself to iPhone owners through its iTunes store, Apple appears to be ceding the e-books market to Amazon and other companies that offer e-book applications.

“Apple is consciously skipping the e-book market,” said Evan R. Schnittman, vice president for business development and rights at Oxford University Press. “I think it’s pretty significant.”

The millions of people who use their cellphones daily to play games, download applications and browse the Web may not realize that they have an unseen companion: advertisers that can track their interests, their habits and even their location.

Smartphones, like the iPhone and BlackBerry Curve, are the latest and potentially most extensive way for advertisers to aim ads at certain consumers. Advertisers already tailor ads for small groups of consumers on the Web based on personal information. But cellphones have a much higher potential for personalized advertising, especially when they use applications like Yelp or Urbanspoon with GPS to identify a person’s location, right down to the street corner where they are standing.

Advertisers will pay high rates for the ability to show, for example, ads for a nearby restaurant to someone leaving a Broadway show, especially when coupled with information about the gender, age, finances and interests of the consumer.

Eswar Priyadarshan, the chief technology officer of Quattro Wireless, which places advertising for clients like Sony on mobile sites, says he typically has 20 pieces of information about a customer who has visited a site or played with an application in his network. “The basic idea is, you go through all these channels, and you get as much data as possible,” he said.

The capability for collecting information has alarmed privacy advocates.

“It’s potentially a portable, personal spy,” said Jeff Chester, the executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, who will appear before Federal Trade Commission staff members this month to brief them on privacy and mobile marketing. He is particularly concerned about data breaches, advertisers’ access to sensitive health or financial information, and a lack of transparency about how advertisers are collecting data. “Users are going to be inclined to say, sure, what’s harmful about a click, not realizing that they’ve consented to give up their information.”

For now, advertisers are using a wide lens to survey people’s behavior on phones, aiming at people by city rather than by specific neighborhood or street.

And while they collect specifics about how someone behaves on the mobile Web — for instance, that someone bought a “Hot N Cold” ring tone after seeing an ad for it, then watched a Miley Cyrus video on TMZ.com — they use that information to categorize that person as a pop-culture fan, and then show a movie ad.

Advertisers are eager to use the information for much more specific targeting, however. An advertising system could know, for instance, that someone is 27 years old, male, a New England Patriots fan (which NFL.com can track), plays Blackjack, travels frequently between Boston and New York on weekdays (which applications using GPS can track) and uses a 3G iPhone. That would make him attractive to a host of advertisers, like the Delta Shuttle or a Las Vegas hotel, whose ads would appear while the consumer was browsing the Web on his phone.

“Everyone’s in an arms race to find out more and more about their users,” said Eric Bader, the managing partner of the mobile advertising firm Brand in Hand. Even application developers are handing over information about their customers to marketers. Dockers San Francisco, a brand of Levi Strauss, for instance, is beginning a campaign this week that will run on applications like iBasketball and iGolf. It will show a model wearing khakis, and the iPhone customer can shake the phone to see the model dance.

Dockers will start by tracking how long people shake the ad, and then “if it does make sense to do follow-up with these consumers, we’ll do that,” said Jonathan Haber, the United States director of Ignition Factory at OMD, the media agency directing the campaign. “We dig in, specifically, with these application developers and owners to get information about usage behavior.”

It’s not just behavior, but also data about income, or even whether you have children, that mobile advertisers consider. A company called Acuity Mobile, whose clients include the MGM Mirage and Harrah’s Entertainment, lets clients use consumer data, including, potentially, income, to determine what kind of offers clients should see.

“Someone who does not spend a lot of money with your brand might get a lower-value offer, like a free dessert in Vegas, versus a free buffet” for a high roller, said Alan R. Sultan, the president and founder of Acuity Mobile.

Applications that use GPS can offer even more specificity, including Loopt, Yelp, Urbanspoon, Where and almost any iPhone application that shows the pop-up box saying it “would like to use your current location.” Several firms are experimenting with a program called AisleCaster that can offer specials based on a person’s exact location in a supermarket aisle or mall.

Advertising systems can track not only the location of the phone, but also that person’s travel pattern: uptown New York to Nob Hill in San Francisco, for instance.

For now, systems like Quattro are using broad city-level categories while trying to sell to advertisers like Amtrak. “You don’t want to necessarily go down to location-level stuff like specific street corners, because it wanders over into really creeping out the user privacy-wise,” Mr. Priyadarshan said.

For now, there are not enough people using smartphones to make it worthwhile for advertisers to use highly specific criteria. But as more people switch to smartphones, that will happen more frequently. The smartphone market in North America increased 69 percent in 2008, according to the research firm Gartner. Google, Palm and BlackBerry are all introducing their own application stores. Despite the amount of data in the market, as long as advertisers don’t use personally identifiable information, there is no current regulation or law that governs how closely advertisers and application developers can track mobile phone users. Opting out of mobile targeted advertising is difficult, and that’s assuming consumers are even aware how closely they are being tracked.

“I didn’t know they were doing that, although I’m not surprised to hear it,” said Jordan Penn, 32, an affordable-housing developer in San Diego who has downloaded about 12 apps to his iPhone. “It doesn’t really concern me any more than all of the other tracking that goes on when you access the Internet.” Paul M. Schwartz, a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and an information privacy law expert, said tracking by advertisers was problematic. “People should be allowed to trade most kinds of information for value as long as the terms are fair,” he said. “They’re not fair now.”

Mike Wehrs, the chief executive of the Mobile Marketing Association, said the trade group was updating some of its self-regulatory principles, for example, suggesting that applications e-mail their privacy policies to subscribers rather than asking them to read a policy on the small mobile screen. “I agree there’s more that can be done,” he said. “One thing about mobile, it’s an amazingly fast-moving industry.”

Disguised or not, cellphone towers often carry a patchwork of network upgrades.

The underlying problem, industry analysts say, is the complex quilt of the nation’s wireless networks. The major mobile carriers have spent tens of billions of dollars on new voice and data networks that they advertise as superfast wireless express lanes. But analysts say these upgrades present major engineering challenges, and the networks often underperform.

The resulting technological glitches have given many owners of fancy new phones the urge to throw them out the window and onto the highway.

For many, the iPhone has become a symbol of the gap between the promise of a powerful device and the reality of inconsistent service. Its owners complain of continual hiccups, particularly in certain cities.

AT&T, which is the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the United States, says it has done a lot to improve its network, and is doing more. Last Tuesday, the company announced plans to invest around $11 billion this year to expand and improve its wireless and broadband networks.

“I’m not minimizing the frustration somebody may feel, but I think the improvements in wireless in this country have been extraordinary,” said Mark Siegel, a spokesman for AT&T. “It’s come a long, long way.”

For some AT&T customers, more improvements to the company’s so-called 3G, or third-generation, high-speed network can’t happen soon enough. And industry analysts say the problems at all carriers are becoming more glaring as the growing popularity of so-called smartphones puts pressure on their networks.

“The iPhone and the carriers are shoving 3G down our throats,” said Edward Snyder, an industry analyst with Charter Equity Research. “But the actual experience has been abysmal.”

Overall customer satisfaction with cellphone service has been rising, but it varies among cities and carriers. Verizon customers tend to be happiest with their service, while AT&T and Sprint customers were less satisfied, according to a survey published in Consumer Reports magazine in January. Bob Goodson, 28, the chief executive of a start-up in San Francisco, upgraded in January from a 2G iPhone to a 3G version. On the whole he is very pleased, he said, but his experience varies widely based on what part of the country he is in.

During a recent two-week trip to New York, he said, the coverage was far inferior to what he experiences in California, and made it tough for him to use the map function to get directions.

“I found myself walking around Manhattan frustrated,” Mr. Goodson said. “It couldn’t hang on to the network.”

Even when the network is within reach, its speeds are often not what they should be. A Gartner research report released in January found that data speeds for mobile phone users are often half of what is advertised by the carriers. The most glaring problem, Gartner found, is at AT&T.

“AT&T is constantly falling below the threshold,” said Ken Dulaney, a mobile computing analyst for Gartner, who said he had heard from three of Gartner’s major corporate clients in the last three months that their employees were frustrated with AT&T’s service. “I can’t say that Verizon is trouble-free, but we’ve heard fewer complaints.”

The reasons for the trouble are complicated. Part of the problem is that the companies are constantly upgrading their networks — creating a patchwork of technology on cell towers, and integrating slices of radio spectrum that carry voice and data transmissions.

Analysts said the problem was not unique to AT&T, but was especially pronounced on its network in some cities because of the way its infrastructure was built.

AT&T began introducing its 3G network in 2005, upgrading the equipment and antennas at many of its 40,000 cell towers nationwide. It built the network to complement and take advantage of the technology servicing its older 2G or second-generation network. Many phones still use the 2G network, so it must be kept running.

Emboldened by Apple’s success with its iPhone, many PC makers and chip companies are charging into the mobile-phone business, promising new devices that can pack the horsepower of standard computers into palm-size packages.

The companies are also shifting gears because their technological feats of the last two decades — smaller laptops with faster chips to deliver snazzier graphics — no longer impress consumers, who increasingly find their three-year-old computers adequate for everyday tasks.

“The action is really with the smartphones where everyone is competing to cram the most features into a phone,” said Linley Gwennap, a veteran chip industry analyst and head of the Linley Group. “I think of PCs as just kind of boring these days.”

The new smartphones promised by PC companies will, among other things, handle the full glory of the Internet, power two-way video conferences, and stream high-definition movies to your TV.

It is a development that spells serious competition for established cellphone makers and phone companies. Apple was the first to spot a sleepy industry, shaking up the handset category two years ago with the iPhone. Until recently, the handset makers were the ones reacting to the iPhone — and then with me-too products.

Now fellow PC makers are announcing plans for smartphones in a variety of sizes, shapes and abilities.

Acer, the big PC manufacturer, has gone from offering no cellphones to selling eight new models, with more to come this year.

“The smartphone market is the natural direction of our long-term mobile strategy,” Gianfranco Lanci, chief executive of Acer, a Taiwan-based company, said as he announced the products at last month’s World Mobile Conference in Barcelona. “We’re just taking on another dimension.”

Dell has also worked on prototype phones but has not committed to making a new product. And Asustek, the company that was first to market ultraportable laptops known as netbooks, has new smartphones coming.

The suppliers to the PC industry have also started shifting to the new market. Intel announced a deal to supply the cellphone maker LG with chips for new mobile devices. Nvidia, the PC graphics-chip titan, signed a deal to provide three smartphone makers — which supply handsets to brand-name manufacturers and carriers — with its new Tegra processor.

“The rise of the smartphone and things like graphics and 3D images weren’t important when the incumbents built this business,” said Michael Rayfield, the general manager of Nvidia’s mobile business unit. “This is a once in a lifetime deal where a huge market changes the things that are important to it.”

With smartphones and PCs taking on many of the same functions, there is certainly a fear among PC makers that if they do not get into cellphones, cellphone makers will start building PCs. Acer has characterized the smartphone business as a volatile battlefield, saying it needs to fire first and go after the cellphone makers before they come after it. Indeed, Nokia, the world’s largest cellphone maker, has said it is weighing whether to get into the PC business.

The convergence of the two devices has long been predicted, but it took a confluence of industry changes for it to begin in earnest. For decades chip manufacturers rushed to leapfrog one another with faster processors, and computer makers scrambled to squeeze more functions into smaller boxes. But ever-faster chips eventually become impractical. Their blazing speed requires vast amounts of power and cooling.

The smartphones give the PC makers a chance to extend their newfound expertise in creating low-power products.

In particular, Acer hopes to ride its success selling laptops and netbooks into the mobile phone market through a mix of new software and wireless data plans.

It is working on software that will link all of its portable products together, synchronizing e-mail, contacts, media files and other information among the products. This could open up a way for carriers to sell more wireless 3G data services to consumers, since they could offer a single plan covering multiple devices.

It is an extension of the model that Dell and others are already trying, in which carriers essentially give $400 netbooks away to consumers in exchange for two-year contracts to data plans. Such plans can cost as much as $1,500 over their lifespan.

Deals that cover laptops as well as phones could prove troublesome for existing cellphone companies, as it would offer consumers a suite of products that were tightly integrated and supported. In addition, PC manufacturers come from an industry very familiar with low profit margins and tight cost structures, and would bring those pressures to bear on established cell manufacturers.

“Acer has learned to live and prosper on very thin margins,” said Aymar De Lencquesaing, the head of the company’s smart hand-held business group. “I think we bring this kind of experience to a market that has perhaps has not yet had to endure similar rigor.”

Both Acer and Nvidia have promised very low-cost smartphones, threatening the most lucrative part of the cellphone makers’ business.

At the same time, the phone market has been bombarded with operating systems from Microsoft, Google and Intel.

There is a concern among longstanding players in the industry that operating systems and phone designs are becoming commodities, and that the barrier to entering the marketplace is lower than when mobile-phone manufacturers were building each handset from scratch.

This gives companies like Motorola and Nokia an entirely new set of problems besides falling sales and shrinking margins.

“It’s cataclysmic for the phone guys, who were used to playing golf on Wednesday afternoons,” said Roger Kay, president of Endpoint Technologies Associates, a research firm. “Those times start to look pretty good now.”

Not that such a move will be easy for the PC makers. The PC industry has a spotty record for expanding into consumer electronics. Dell stumbled with its MP3 player, and Hewlett-Packard’s line of televisions failed to catch on with consumers. Both products have been discontinued.

Also, the established mobile-phone makers have longstanding relationships with carriers, which remain reluctant to provide customer support for a wide array of devices from myriad manufacturers. Beyond that, traditional cellphone companies do not want to compete with the likes of Microsoft and Intel, which have grown over the years to dominate the PC business.

Perhaps most critically, traditional phone and mobile chip companies have expertise in making phones that work.

“It has to be a good cellphone first,” said Ed Snyder, an analyst with Charter Equity Research. “This is about as far away from PCs as raising elephants.”

More than 40 years ago, computer researchers came up with the concept of cutting and pasting text in a computer document. Electronic organizers and sophisticated phones have had those basic functions for years.

On stage at its headquarters here on Tuesday, an Apple executive announced that the iPhone would at long last be joining the cut, copy and paste party.

The news, which garnered applause from an assembled crowd of analysts, journalists and Apple employees, was much anticipated by iPhone owners. They will be able to select a piece of information in one program -- say, a FedEx tracking number in an e-mail message -- and then paste it elsewhere -- on FedEx's site in the Web browser, for example.

Apple has said that those features were tricky to add to the iPhone in a way that would be secure and easy to use.

The announcement was one of several Apple made as it previewed a software upgrade, iPhone OS 3.0, that it plans to release this summer.

The event was a shot across the bow of the other makers of mobile phone software, like Google, Palm, Research in Motion and Microsoft, which are bringing out their own smartphones in an increasingly competitive market.

''Apple wants to start reminding consumers of what is coming down the line and what they might expect from the iPhone,'' said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst with the research firm Interpret.

Among the new tricks of the updated software are features that will allow developers to create multiplayer games that work over a phone-to-phone wireless connection, and ways for iPhone applications to push messages to users even when they are not running.

That last improvement could unleash a new wave of creativity on the iPhone. Companies like ESPN can send scores to sports fans, and instant messaging can now become far more practical on the device.

The new software will also give developers new ways to make money on the iPhone, allowing them to do transactions within an application -- for example, selling monthly subscriptions, new levels within a game or items in an online store.

Apple said the new operating system would be available to current iPhone users at no charge sometime this summer, when analysts expect the company to introduce new hardware and perhaps a less expensive version of the device. The new software will be sold for $9.95 to owners of the iPod Touch. The company says it now has a combined installed base of 30 million iPhones and iPod Touches.

Nonplused, the customer stammered, “You mean it’s a cellphone, too?”

Such is the spell that Steven P. Jobs has cast on the American consumer.

It has been almost six months since Mr. Jobs, the world’s consummate salesman, introduced the iPhone as the Ronco Veg-O-Matic for the Internet era. Tongue only partly in cheek, Mr. Jobs promised that Apple’s entry into the cellular handset market would be a better phone, Web browser and music player.

Mr. Jobs succeeded in building expectations for what some have called “the God machine.” The bar-of-soap-size phone is being coveted as a talisman for a digital age, and iPhone hysteria is beginning to reach levels usually reserved for video-game machines at Christmas.

Although the phones are expected to cost as much as $600 when they go on sale at Apple and AT&T stores later this month, each company has received more than a million inquiries about the product's availability. Apple disclosed in television commercials Sunday night that the phone would be released June 29.

Further evidence that expectations have been wound up to a fever pitch: the phones, or promises to deliver a phone, are already on sale on eBay for $830. A pundit as unlikely as Arianna Huffington sought out Mr. Jobs directly for advice on being the first to score a phone. (He told her to go to an AT&T store.)

Last week, during an appearance at a technology industry conference in Southern California, Mr. Jobs teased the audience by briefly pulling an iPhone out of his jeans pocket and immediately slipping it back out of sight.

The anticipation, which is intense even by Jobsian standards, has led to some quiet, behind-the-scenes anxiety at Apple. Some Apple executives worry privately that expectations for the one-button phones may be too high and that first-generation buyers will end up disappointed.

Certainly there are skeptics. The high price will limit the phones’ appeal to true believers. The cellular network that the iPhone operates on is slower than those of many of its rivals. Several of Apple’s handset competitors hope that its decision not to include a keyboard, relying instead on a touch-screen virtual keyboard, will limit the attractiveness of the iPhone in text-intensive business markets.

“It’s very media-centric,” said a director at a handset competitor who declined to be identified, saying that his company did not want to elicit comparisons with the iPhone. “It will hit one sweet spot, but not necessarily all of the sweet spots — we hope.”

As has often been the case during the last three decades, Mr. Jobs’s timing may be impeccable.

While entire industries have been struggling for more than half a decade to find the right combination of features to merge cellphones and computers, Apple appears to have stepped in at precisely the right moment.

“These devices have become ubiquitous, and there’s an enormous hunger out there,” said Peter Schwartz, the chairman of Global Business Network, a consulting firm based here.

Most analysts believe that Apple will easily exceed its initial goal of selling 10 million phones by the end of next year.

“It will be just 1 percent of the handset market,” said Jagdish Rebello, director of wireless communications research at iSuppli, a market research firm based in El Segundo, Calif. “But it is essentially shifting the balance of power into the hands of the mobile device manufacturers.”

News reports out of Asia in recent weeks indicate that Apple may have placed an order for an additional five million phones with Quanta Computer, a Taiwanese manufacturer that is a leading maker of laptop computers. Another Taiwanese manufacturer, Hon Hai Precision Industry, was earlier reported to have been awarded the original order. Apple declines to comment on its plans.

Although a tiny fraction of the global phone industry, a 1 percent market share would make Apple a head-to-head competitor with the high-end version of Microsoft’s Windows Mobile software, which is used on a number of smartphones.

During the first quarter of 2007 Microsoft’s software was used on about 3.2 million personal digital assistants, or about 60 percent of the market, according to Gartner, the market research firm. Microsoft has come to dominate the market against competitors like Palm, Research In Motion and Symbian, but Apple’s entry is likely to reset the most profitable high end of the handset market.

“It will change the whole category of what people think a phone is,” said Richard Doherty, president of the Envisioneering Group, an industry consulting firm.

To head off potential consumer disappointment, Apple said several months ago that it would have the ability to add features to the iPhones after they were purchased. The company’s executives say that the capability to upgrade the iPhone in the field will give it a significant advantage over other cellphones, which are usually replaced frequently.

“Other carriers are scrambling to figure out what their strategies should be,” said Chetan Sharma, an industry consultant who follows the wireless data market.

One potentially crucial factor in determining the iPhone’s success that has yet to be clarified by the company: How willing is Apple to permit independent software vendors to develop programs for the iPhone? When he introduced the phone in January, Mr. Jobs seemed unwilling to permit outside software development. He said that opening that door would tend to raise both security and stability issues that were unacceptable in the wireless handset market.

Last week, however, at the D: All Things Digital conference, he seemed to relent. He said Apple was looking for ways to make it possible for developers to create software for the iPhone.

A person briefed on Apple’s plans said that at its software developer conference this month, Apple intends to announce that it will make it possible for developers of small programs written for the Macintosh to easily convert them to run on the iPhone.

Software, Mr. Jobs said last week, is what would make the difference. Poor software, he said, is what undermined the Japanese consumer electronics industry. And by that same token, software is what will give the iPhone what he said would be a five-year lead on the rest of the handset industry.
